Getting to know how to get scuba certified can sound a little complicated when you’re doing it for the first time. There are classes to take, skills to practise, and open-water dives to complete before you can officially call yourself a certified diver.

The good news is that the process is quite straightforward when you take it step by step. If you’re wondering how to get scuba certified, here’s what you can expect from choosing your first course to completing your certification.

Choose an Entry-Level Scuba Certification

The first step in learning how to get scuba certified is choosing an entry-level course. For most beginners, the Open Water Diver certification is the standard starting point. These courses are offered by recognized diving organizations and cover the basic knowledge and skills you need to dive within the limits of your certification. Before signing up, there are a few things worth checking:

  • What the course includes: Make sure it covers both the theory and practical training you’ll need.
  • How long it takes: Course length can vary, so choose one that fits your schedule without making you feel rushed.
  • Who will teach you: Look for qualified instructors and a reputable dive centre with experience working with beginners.

Choosing the right course can make a big difference, especially if this is your first time using scuba equipment. A good programme should help you feel prepared and comfortable before you move on to your first open-water dive.

Check Your Swimming and Medical Requirements

Before starting your certification, you’ll need to make sure you meet the basic physical and medical requirements for scuba diving. You don’t need to be an excellent swimmer, but you should feel comfortable and confident in the water. Most certification courses include simple swimming and water-confidence assessments to make sure you can manage yourself safely during the dive.

You’ll also need to complete a medical questionnaire before getting into the water. If you have any concerns or your answers require further assessment, you may be asked to speak with a medical professional before diving. Taking care of these requirements early will make the rest of the certification process much easier, so you can focus on learning and enjoying your first diving experience.

Complete the Theory Before You Dive

Understanding what happens underwater is an important part of learning how to get scuba certified. Before entering open water, you’ll need to learn the basic theory behind scuba diving. Your lessons will usually cover:

  • Scuba equipment: learning how to use and care for your mask, regulator, buoyancy control device, and other gear.
  • Breathing and equalisation: learning how to breathe properly underwater and equalise your ears comfortably.
  • Dive planning and safety: learning basic procedures for planning and completing a safe dive.
  • Underwater communication: using hand signals to communicate with your instructor or dive buddy.

Depending on the programme, you may complete the theory through classroom lessons, online learning, or a combination of both. The goal isn’t simply to memorise information, but to understand what you’re doing and why. This foundation is an important part of knowing how to get scuba certified and becoming a more confident diver.

Practise Your Skills in Confined Water

After learning the theory, you’ll move into confined water, usually a swimming pool or calm, shallow water area. This is where the things you’ve learned start to feel more natural before you actually enter the ocean. As part of learning how to get scuba certified, you’ll use this stage to build confidence and practise the skills you’ll need for your open-water dives.

Your instructor will guide you through essential diving skills, from getting comfortable with your equipment to controlling your breathing and buoyancy. You’ll also practise basic underwater communication and learn what to do if something unexpected happens during a dive. This stage is especially important for beginners because you can focus on learning without dealing with deeper water or strong currents. Don’t worry if you don’t get everything right immediately, your instructor can repeat the exercises and guide you until you feel comfortable and ready for open water. It’s an important step in understanding how to get scuba certified before taking your skills into the real ocean.

Complete Your Open-Water Training Dives

After completing your confined-water training, you’ll move on to your open-water dives. This is where everything starts to feel more like an actual diving experience and becomes an important step in learning how to get scuba certified.

Under the supervision of your instructor, you’ll complete a series of training dives where you practise the skills you’ve already learned while exploring a real dive environment. You’ll learn how to enter and exit the water safely, control your depth, manage your air supply, communicate with your dive group, and follow basic dive plans. Once you’ve completed these dives and feel comfortable in the water, you’ll be one step closer to becoming a certified diver.

Get Certified and Know Your Diving Limits

After successfully completing the required theory, skills, and open-water training, you’ll receive your scuba certification, completing the main steps of how to get scuba certified.

However, getting certified doesn’t mean you can immediately dive anywhere. Your certification level determines the types of dives and conditions you’re trained to handle. Always consider your experience, depth limits, environmental conditions, and whether you have the right training before choosing a dive site.

If you’re still building confidence, continuing to dive with an instructor or experienced buddy is a great way to develop your skills. Remember, becoming certified isn’t the end of your learning. Every dive gives you another opportunity to become more comfortable, responsible, and confident underwater, which is an important part of how to get scuba certified.

Get Certified and Explore Diving in Nusa Penida With Deep Roots

Once you’re certified, Nusa Penida can be an exciting place to continue your diving journey. The island is known for its coral reefs, clear water, manta rays, and diverse marine life, offering something different from a typical beginner dive.

Diving in Nusa Penida can include different conditions and dive environments, so choosing the right site for your experience level is important. Professional guidance can also make the experience more comfortable, especially if you’re visiting the island for the first time. Deep Roots offers comfortable accommodation for travelers who want to combine diving with a longer stay in Nusa Penida. We designed Deep Roots as a peaceful Nusa Penida Resort where you can relax between dives and easily explore the island. Staying longer also means you don’t have to rush your diving experience into a single day. You can take time to rest, enjoy the island, and join guided diving sessions that match your experience.

If you’re learning how to get scuba certified because you want to explore more of the underwater world, getting certified is only the beginning. With the right training, responsible planning, and enough time to enjoy the experience, your first certification can become the start of many more underwater adventures.
