October can be an exciting month to dive, with changing conditions bringing different marine life, clearer waters, and new underwater experiences. From manta rays and hammerhead sharks to colorful coral reefs, there are plenty of destinations to explore beneath the surface. If you’re planning your next dive trip, these are some of the best places to dive in October. Just remember to check local weather, currents, and sea conditions before you go.

Nusa Penida, Indonesia

Nusa Penida is one of the best places to dive in October for divers hoping to see large marine life. April to October is generally the island’s dry season, with calmer seas and better visibility possible. Manta rays can be seen year-round, while Mola mola are more common from July to October. However, currents can be strong, so choose dive sites that match your experience.

  • Manta Point: Spot manta rays throughout the year.
  • Crystal Bay: Look for Mola mola from July to October.
  • Diving conditions: Check currents and visibility before each dive.
  • Nusa Penida resort: Stay comfortably between your dives.

Between dives, Nusa Penida has plenty to keep you busy. Explore cliffs, relax on quiet beaches, or discover the island’s natural scenery. Staying on the island also means you can take your time instead of rushing back after each dive. It’s a simple way to combine diving with a relaxed island escape.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Raja Ampat is one of the best places to dive in October, with October to April often offering good diving conditions. The seas are generally calmer, visibility can be good, and water temperatures stay around 27–30°C. Its waters are famous for rich marine biodiversity, colorful reefs, and manta encounters. With so many dive sites to explore, Raja Ampat is ideal for a longer underwater adventure.

  • Dampier Strait: Explore colorful reefs and look for manta rays.
  • Misool: Discover beautiful underwater landscapes and diverse marine life.
  • Marine biodiversity: See a wide variety of coral, fish, and other sea creatures.
  • Longer dive trips: Spend several days exploring different reefs and dive sites.

It's the kind of destination that makes every extra day on the boat worth it

Maldives

The Maldives is one of the best places to dive in October, especially for manta rays and whale sharks. Manta rays can be seen year-round, while North Malé Atoll is known for manta encounters from May to November. Compared with Indonesia, the Maldives is especially known for seasonal manta and whale-shark encounters, while Indonesia offers a wider mix of reefs, marine life, and dive environments across different islands. October conditions can vary in both destinations, so check local weather, currents, and sea conditions before diving.

  • Manta rays: Spot mantas around North Malé Atoll.
  • Whale sharks: Visit Hanifaru Bay for seasonal sightings.

Between the manta cleaning stations and Hanifaru Bay, underwater time here stays focused on the big stuff.

Fiji

For divers looking for warm tropical water and seasonal marine-life encounters, Fiji is another of the best places to dive in October. May to October is generally the clearer and drier diving season, with better chances of seeing manta rays. Humpback whales also pass through Fiji’s waters from July to October. October can offer a mix of colorful reefs and larger marine life, but conditions can vary, so check the currents and choose dive sites that match your experience.

Bonaire Caribbean Netherlands

Bonaire offers a different kind of diving holiday and is among the best places to dive in October for travelers who value flexibility. The island has more than 85 dive sites, including 54 that can be reached from shore. This makes it easy to dive without planning every trip around a boat schedule. October also brings diving, technical-diving, and conservation events to the island.
