Summer is right around the corner. Most of us are ready to close the laptop, mute the group chats, and disappear for a while. Travel in 2026 is shifting. People are tired of overcrowded tourist traps. We want places that feel authentic, peaceful, and real. Choosing the right spot is not an easy job.  Finding the best island for summer vacation isn't just about blue water. It is about the food, the culture, and the local people. It is about completely disconnecting from the 9-5 life. These five incredible islands should be at the top of your list.

Nusa Penida

First up is Nusa Penida. This island sits just a 45-minute boat ride from Bali. It immediately makes you feel small. Nature here demands your full attention. If you want a break from the usual crowds, it is a top choice for the best island for summer vacation. These are tips for you:

  • Hire a Local Driver: Winding roads and paths to the beach are much easier to navigate with an expert. You can save your energy for the walks.
  • Visit Kelingking Beach: Stand at the edge of the cliff and watch the heavy waves crash far below. The viewpoint gives you a great look at the open ocean.
  • Swim at Manta Point: Get into the deep water to look for giant manta rays up close. It is a completely different world under the surface.
  • Go Diving at PED: Head to the northern coast to see the coral reef wall. The water currents carry you right past large schools of fish and healthy marine life.
  • Stay for 2 Days at Least: Do not rush this into a quick day trip from Bali. Spending a couple of nights here gives you enough time to explore both sides of the island.

It takes a lot of energy to experience everything here. Your legs will be tired after climbing the steps at Diamond Beach. Staying at a cozy Nusa Penida resort gives you a great place to reset. You can sit outside with a cold drink and just unwind after a long day.

Belitung

Next up is Belitung. This island sits off the east coast of Sumatra. It gives you a much slower pace of life. The coastline is famous for the giant granite boulders scattered across the white sand. The water at Tanjung Tinggi Beach is calm and clear. You can spend your afternoon walking among the giant rocks and wading in the shallow sea. It is a great choice if you want to avoid heavy tourist crowds.

To see more of the area, you can take a local boat out for island hopping. You can visit Lengkuas Island to see the historic lighthouse and snorkel near the coral reefs. When you get hungry, stop by a small food stall for fresh grilled seafood. Staying at a local resort gives you a great place to wind down. You can just sit outside, watch the sunset, and take it easy.

Raja Ampat

Third on the list is Raja Ampat. This archipelago sits at the far eastern tip of Indonesia. It is easily a top choice for the best island for summer vacation if you want to get far away from everything. The landscape here is unlike anything else. Hundreds of green limestone islands rise straight out of the clear water. You can take a local boat to weave through the rock formations at Piaynemo and climb up the wooden steps to see the view from above. The whole area feels very isolated and untouched.

The water here holds an incredible amount of life. A fun fact about Raja Ampat is that it has the highest marine biodiversity on Earth, with around 75 percent of all coral species living in these waters. You can jump in with a snorkel and see thousands of fish, sea turtles, and giant manta rays right below the surface. Staying at a local eco-lodge gives you a great place to rest. You can just sit on the wooden deck, watch the water, and wind down.

Karimun Jawa

Fourth on the list is Karimunjawa. This group of islands sits in the Java Sea, off the north coast of Central Java. The water here is incredibly clear. You can easily see the fish and coral reefs right from your boat. Renting a scooter is the best way to get around the main island. You can ride past rows of palm trees and find quiet stretches of white sand with nobody else around. It is a great option if you want a simple beach trip away from the main tourist paths.

The daily routine here is very simple. You can spend your afternoon swimming at Bobby Beach and then head to Tanjung Gelam to watch the sunset by the water. At night, the town square turns into an open-air fish market. You can pick out fresh seafood from the daily catch and watch the locals grill it right there for you. Staying at a welcoming local lodge gives you a great spot to recharge. If you live in Java, this is easily the best place to escape the busy city noise without traveling too far.

Gili Air

Last on the list is Gili Air. This tiny island sits just off the coast of Lombok. The best part about it is the complete lack of motorized traffic. There are no cars or motorbikes here, so you get around entirely by walking or riding a bicycle. It gives the whole place a very friendly, community feel. You can ride a bike around the entire island in less than an hour, stopping whenever you see a good patch of sand.

The eastern side of the island has great snorkeling right from the beach. You can grab a mask, walk straight into the water at Turtle Point, and look for sea turtles near the reef. In the evening, everyone moves over to the western coast to watch the sun go down. Beachfront bungalows line the sand, making it easy to roll out of bed and walk straight to a local cafe. If you just want a simple beach trip, this is the best island for summer vacation. It is the kind of place where you completely lose track of time.

How to Choose the Right Island

Picking the best island for summer vacation depends on what you actually want to do. Here is a quick way to find the spot that fits your trip.

  • For Cliffs and Diving: Choose Nusa Penida if you want to climb down to the beach and swim with manta rays.
  • For Giant Rocks and Seafood: Go to Belitung if you want to explore the coast by boat and eat fresh food.
  • For Snorkeling and Coral: Head to Raja Ampat if your main goal is seeing rare underwater life.
  • For a Close Getaway: Pick Karimunjawa if you live in Java and want a quick trip away from the city.
  • For No Traffic: Choose Gili Air if you want to walk or bicycle everywhere.

Every island has a completely different feel. Think about what you want to do each day and pick one.
