Most people start planning their itinerary of things to do in Nusa Penida with the famous Kelingking "T-Rex" Beach or Crystal Bay. While those spots are undeniably stunning, they often come with long queues. What if we told you where the real magic of this island was? We have curated a list of secret spots that define the true island experience. Adding these hidden gems to your list of things to do in Nusa Penida will transform your trip.

Know Before You Go (So the “Hidden Gems” Stay Fun)

Before diving into the best things to do in Nusa Penida, it helps to understand the island’s rhythm. Early mornings are ideal for exploring, while afternoons are best for rest or ocean views. The infrastructure is developing, but the charm of finding things to do in Nusa Penida isn’t hard. What to prepare beforehand:

  • Bring sturdy shoes (Roads can be steep and narrow)
  • cash (ATMs are scarce in remote areas)
  • Sunblock (don’t get sunburnt in this tropical weather)
  • Plenty of water (many things to do in Nusa Penida involve stairs, cliffs, or forest paths)

Suwehan Beach (Pantai Suwehan)

Looking for things to do in Nusa Penida that offer total seclusion? Suwehan Beach is the right answer for you. Located on the southeastern tip of the island, this beach is often compared to the famous Diamond Beach but without the massive crowds. It is the perfect spot to picnic and read a book.

Getting here is an adventure. You will navigate a steep set of stairs down the cliffside (about a 20-minute trek). The most iconic feature is a large, triangular rock jutting out of the water, resembling a shark fin. Because it is tidal, visiting during low tide is important to note.

Tembeling Forest & Natural Pools

Most travelers associate the island with dry cliffs. These spots might be a surprise for you. The Tembeling Forest is where you will find a lush, cool, primary rainforest. A short hike leads you to natural freshwater pools overlooking the ocean. Combining jungle with coastal view.

Hidden within the jungle are natural freshwater pools that sit right next to the ocean. Swimming in these jungle pools is a must thing to do in Nusa Penida. Early mornings are teh perfect time for the quiet experience. Making it one of the most serene things to do in Nusa Penida for travelers who appreciate nature.

Peguyangan Waterfall & The Blue Stairs

Peguyangan is more than just a waterfall. While it is called a "waterfall," it is actually a series of springs running down the cliff face into the ocean. The iconic blue stairs along a cliffside, leading to sacred water springs. Locals often come here for purification rituals. At the bottom, there is a sacred temple where locals perform water purification rituals. Wearing a sarong and sash is mandatory in this holy site (usually available for rent at the top).

Banah Cliff Point

Sunset chasers often go to the west coast of Nusa Penida. But you should try watching the day end at Banah Cliff Point. Located on the southwest coast, this viewpoint offers a panoramic look at the ocean. The highlight here is the "Banah Arch," a rock formation in the middle of the ocean that has been hollowed out by waves, creating a natural bridge.

  • When to go: Late afternoon is ideal when the light softens.
  • Why it’s special: Unlike Kelingking, there are no fences or crowds here.

Paluang Cliff Viewpoint (The Quieter “Kelingking Angle”)

We know you want that famous T-Rex photo. However, fighting the crowds at the main Kelingking lookout can be exhausting. That is why visiting Paluang Cliff is perfect for travelers who prefer a calmer setting. There’s even an old car perched near the cliff. Visit in the late afternoon when the light softens. You’ll enjoy one of the most relaxed things to do in Nusa Penida.

Pura Puncak Mundi (High-Point Views + Calm Atmosphere)

Pura Puncak Mundi offers a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Sitting near the island’s highest point, there’s a temple. As the highest point on the island (over 500 meters above sea level), the air here is noticeably cooler and fresher. Dress respectfully and take time to observe local offerings. Visiting sacred places like this adds depth to your journey.

Gamat Bay

Snorkeling at Gamat Bay is a must things to do in Nusa Penida. It is a smaller version of Crystal Bay, accessible by a steep road or by boat. The water here has colorful coral and vibrant marine life. Because the currents can be strong, it is often better suited for confident swimmers or those on a guided boat tour.  It is reccomended to look into professional diving Nusa Penida experiences to see the deeper reefs.
